Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is a dance company that
tours nationally and internationally. They graced the
stage at the Baton Rouge River Center for the Performing
Arts on Tuesday.
Many students from SU and LSU attended this event
including SU’s Look Dancers, LSU’s Legacy Dancers, and
dance minors. Some students described the performance as
something they could learn and do.
The
show was not the hottest thing I’ve seen, but it is HOT
and important to go see theatre and know what’s out
there. Because if you don’t know what’s out there how
can you do something better.
For
example, many dance groups perform Michael Jackson
themed routines. You don’t have to be a dancer to know
that Michael Jackson routines have been done over a
hundred times by many. So, it’s important to see theatre
and know what’s out there so you won’t repeat something
that has been done before.
There was a dance workshop that took place Monday at a
dancing school called the Dancer’s Workshop located off
of Bluebonnet. The workshop was taught by Hubbard Street
dancer Tobin Del Cuore.
Students learned different combinations and a dance to
Mariah Carey’s song titled “Mine Again”. One of Baton
Rouge’s greatest black choreographers Avery was in
attendance. I attended the class also. The class was
easier than I expected from a big time touring company.
Baton Rouge isn’t a known place to see dance companies
perform, so it was wonderful to see people taking
advantage of this opportunity. The Baton Rouge River
Center has more shows to come in the future. So, go see
theatre, It’s Hot!
If
you know of something that is going to be Hot In B.R.
