Week 5: LSU Defensive Line

By Jonathan Floyd

This week I’m highlighting the anchor of the spectacular LSU defense. The line leads this stingy defense that is among the top teams in the nation.

Starting at left defensive end for the Tigers is red shirt sophomore Tyson Jackson. Jackson was a selection for the Freshmen All-SEC team in 2005 and has not looked back since. He recorded 13 tackles with two sacks in 12 games of action for the Tigers last year. At 6-5 and close to 300 pounds, the Edgard, LA native provides a destructive force on the line.

At the left defensive tackle is junior vet Glenn “Putt” Dorsey. The 6-2, 300 pound Dorsey has two years experience seeing action in all 12 games his freshmen year and starting one game last year. Going into this season Dorsey had 46 career tackles and three sacks. Dorsey’s numbers don’t measure his value to this defense. He has been solid for the Tigers the last two years and he is a definite NFL prospect in the near future.

Lining up next to Dorsey will be Marlon Favorite. The red shirt sophomore Favorite is the shortest starter on the defensive lineman. In his first year starting, Favorite has held his own amongst the other lineman after playing in only three games last year. Though he finished out last season with two tackles, Favorite came to into fall camp and excelled on the line. With the focus on Glenn Dorsey, expect Favorite to step up and improve his numbers.

The final starter is past transfer, senior Chase Pittman. Pittman, a Shreveport native, attended the University of Texas until 2003 and sat out the 2004 due to the NCAA transfer rule. In 2005, Pittman started in 12 games and finished with 34 tackles and three sacks. Pittman also recorded a sack on old Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler. Pittman stands at 6-5 and a somewhat slim 270 pounds, and is an ideal NFL defensive lineman with good speed and agility.

The “supporting cast” and I used that term lightly, consist of Ricky Jean-Francois, Charles Alexander, Tim Washington, and Leo Desselle. The guys mentioned in the last sentence provide a relief for the starters with no compromise of ability and talent.
