As
the Jaguars continue to struggle this season, we take a
look at their promising receiving corps. At the
beginning of the season, with the running game
suffering, SU receivers were carrying the load for the
team.
Tight end Brian Washington leads the Jags with 5
touchdown grabs; with only ten total touches this
season. Washington is the target for most of the short
yard situations, especially in the red zone. The longest
reception this season for Washington has been 28 yards.
Washington has 132 yards on the year and is averaging
13.2 yards per catch this season.
Southern’s leading receiver is junior Gerard Landry.
Landry returns to the Jags after a breakout season in
2005. The second receiver, Landry, caught 39 passes for
574 yards and four touchdowns. This season Landry has
become the leading receiver with 28 grabs for 435 yards
and three touchdowns. Landry is averaging 15.5 yards per
catch with his longest reception being a 55 yard bomb.
Freshman Juamorris Stewart is next up for the Jags.
Stewart, a transfer from Southern Miss., has 12
receptions for 149 yards so far in the season. Stewart
has the longest reception of any Jaguar this season,
with a 65 yard gain. Stewart has only one touchdown this
far in the season.
Rounding out the receivers is another transfer at
receiver for the Jags is Del Roberts. Roberts is a
sophomore transfers from the University of North
Carolina. Roberts has 17 receptions for 116 yards and
one touchdown. Joining Roberts is red shirt junior
Albert Turner and Marquarius Roberts. Baton Rouge
native, Turner, has 8 receptions for 94 yards, but has
yet to get into the end zone. Henderson has 9 grabs for
72 yards and one touchdown on the year.
Southern’s receivers are a big asset for the Jags, but
with the sputtering running game, and the round robin
that has developed at QB, the receivers may not get to
make the impact that they were able to at the beginning
of the season.
