Don’t Count the Jags Out

By Gabriel Patton

Once again the Jags find themselves in a tight game and the outcome is another loss. After a heart pounding, double overtime game with the Jackson State Tigers, the Jags find themselves two and three in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

“Once again we had the lead in the forth quarter and came up short again because we could not close out the game” said Michael Williams.

Although SU had a commanding 28-14 lead, the Tigers found a way to capitalize on the Jags mistakes. An interception in the by JSU was the turning point. This allowed the game to go into overtime. With an interception by Glen Bell, the Jags marched down the field to set up a 29 yard field goal missed by kicker Breck Ackley. This was Ackley first miss in 27 attempts. The game then went into overtime. After receiving the ball first, the Jags attempted another field goal that was unsuccessful. This cost the Jags the game.

Next week the Jags travel back to Mississippi, but they are facing the Alcorn State Braves. The Braves are going to be a tough challenge for the Jags.

“They are a well coached team and will become a difficult task for us. We are just going to have to put this last lost behind us and focus on next week’s game.”

The Braves are lead by running back Jeremy McCoy who averages 125.6 yards per game. Quarter back Tony Hobson is a major threat with his 136.9 passing average per game. Earning SWAC honors for his performance against Texas Southern is receiver Charlie Spiller. Spiller is averaging 73.5 yards per game.

On the defense end the Braves are dominating. Last week Lee Robinson earned SWAC honors also for his contribution of his 11 total stops (eight solo) along with two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup, four tackles for loss and three sacks for 31 yards against Texas Southern. Accompanying him on defense is Antonio Cooper and Lester Mosley with 89 and 84 tackles this season.

Even though CJ Byrd had a game high 189 yard passing, he will need to improve against the Braves.

Although the Jags season has been a roller coaster ride of close games, all things may not have gone in the favor of the Jags. But with that said, SU still have a chance to make it to the SWAC championship. With the loss by Grambling this weekend, the Jaguars need to win all of their game from here on out and we could possibly see the Jags competing for the ring in December. Ponder on this… Do the Jags really have what it takes? Will the inexperience of this team become the downfall of a rocky season? Or will the Jags learn from the many mistakes that have cost them many mistakes and become victorious enough to make it to the championship game?
