Jags “D” dominates Hornets

Question arises, who’s the real QB?

By Gabriel Patton

After an impressing 38-20 victory over the Alabama State University Hornets, the Jaguars are coming into their own. Three of the Jag earned SWAC honors for their performance on Sunday. So what was the difference from the week before and this week’s performance?

“We had to get our minds right. We got the attitude that we are going to run the ball and practiced more in a game tempo speed. We practiced more on a two period of inside run drills. Also a lot of our freshman and younger players are getting a better feel of the game.” stated senior guard Wyatt Tatum.

Next week the Jags will be traveling to Huntsville to face the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The 3-1 Bulldogs are 1-0 at home and this will be a challenge for the Jags. Led by quarterback Kelcy Luke he is averaging 140.2 passing yards per game. Assisting him are receivers Kevin Francis and Thomas Harris who are averaging 35.5 and 36.8 receiving yards per game. And in the back field Ta’Mar Scott is leading the way with rushing for 70.0 yards per game.

“We expect them to come downhill and run heavy. They will probably do this and then go for the deep pass” said junior lineman Demarcus Stewart.

Defensively against the Hornets the Jags were “a beast”. They were dominating from start to finish. With the defense creating turnovers, the offense was able to convert those opportunities into 21 points. Leading the way last week was DJ Brooks with a career high 15 tackles with two of those for a loss and one for a sack. Kendrick Bailey also complemented the defense with 12 tackles. Michael Williams earned honors form the Louisiana Sports Writers had a career high two interceptions returning one for eighty two yards and the touchdown.

“Our special teams will play a key part in this upcoming game against the Bulldogs” stated Stewart.

This is very true after last week’s performance. Breck Ackley was Specialist of the Week going five for five in field goals and one of the being a 44 yarder and averaging 47 yards per punt.

“From Alabama A&M, we expect them to bring everything they got. We are going to see them shoot the gap, some stunts and blitz from different angles.” said Tatum.

Defensively on the year, Jonny Bladwin and Avery Moland are leading in tackles with 37 for Baldwin and 26 for Moland. Ta’Mar is averaging 19.8 yards on kick return and Frank Moore 1.3 yards per return.

“We will establish our running game to open up for some passes”

With JC Lewis out the Jags relied on the shoulders of CJ Byrd and newcomer Bryant Lee. Both quarterback had a stellar game for both rushing and passing the ball. Byrd 6 for 8 for 60 yards and rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown. Lee was 2 for 4 and passed for 36 yards. Lee also earned Newcomer of the Week rushing and passing his first collegiate touchdown. Always there to make the quarterback job easier is Gerard Landry and Bria Washington. Landry had 3 catches for 52 yards and Washington one catch for a 28-yard touchdown. The power was brought by running back Kendall Addison who rushed 12 times for 66 yards and one for a touchdown.  So I was thinking, do we have ourselves a quarterback controversy? The numbers don’t lie and with substituting Lee and Bryant in and out of the game I ponder where will Lewis fit in this system? Although Lewis is injured, who is the real leader of this team? I believe that the coaches have a big decision to make come Saturday.( e-mail me: gpatton_24@bnow.com for your thoughts. Would love to hear for you)

Jags Speak to the Fans

We believe that they should support us more than they are. If you are going to be true to the “Jaguar Nation” and real Jags then you can not be spectators, you must be fans. If you are with us then you are with us until the end. Just sit back, relax and support us like in the previous years. As long as we bring home that “W” and get the ring at the end they should stick wit us.
