The Healthier Side of Burgers

By Tanisha Robinson

For the last recipe of my burger series, I cater to those who prefer a more figure and heart friendly burger—a turkey burger. Ground turkey and even ground chicken is more healthy than using ground beef, so you could definitely make chicken burgers instead of turkey burgers. I have had a turkey burger made with ground turkey with very little fat that I did not care for too much. In my opinion, it was dry and had a very different flavor. I have also had a burger made with ground turkey with a little more fat that I thought was very good. I did not miss the ground meat at all; it was juicy and its taste resembled a regular hamburger.

Whether you use ground turkey with barely any fat at all or meat with more fat, it is your choice. However using meat with a great deal of fat may be just as fattening as ground meat. Look on the package and there will be two numbers separated by a slash. The second of these numbers tells you the percentage of fat in the meat and the first indicates the lean percentage of the meat. For example, 75/25 means the meat is 75% fat free.

Making these burgers is very simple. Add whatever seasonings you wish. The recipe calls for poultry seasoning because it is seasoning made especially for poultry. It is popular around Thanksgiving time as people use it to season their turkeys. Minced garlic adds great flavor to these burgers. The smaller the garlic is chopped the stronger the flavor is, so if you prefer not to have that strong flavor, be careful with the amount you add to the meat.

Ingredients

1 lb. ground turkey

2 tsp poultry seasoning

1 tbsp minced garlic

¼ c. diced onion

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Hamburger buns

Preheat skillet over medium heat.

Season meat with poultry seasoning, garlic, and onions. Mix, making sure to thoroughly incorporate the ingredients. Shape into patties.

When ready to cook, add the olive oil to the skillet. This helps to prevent sticking. Cook the patties until done. Remember, this is poultry, so it is dangerous to undercook the meat. Once meat is cooked, assemble your burger.

I hope I have shown you just how versatile a simple hamburger can be. I am not advocating eating burgers everyday, but when you do crave one you can make your own instead of buying it. Play with different flavors and invent your own burger. Make them how you want to, just enjoy your food.
