What’s Hot In B.R.

“K”horeographer Jonas Vanderbilt

By Tamika Jett

Jonas Vanderbilt is one of the hottest choreographer’s in B.R. He has a unique spelling to the word choreography, “Khoreography.” This Khoreography is mainly jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, modern, and funk dance, which is done for a host of teams and individuals all over the south.

He began dancing with a small hip hop group that he started with some friends of his entitled "The Clique" in high school. This group opened up for various artists in the New Iberia, Louisiana area.

Jonas graduated from Southern University with a BS in Chemistry. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He was a member of the Human Jukebox Marching Band. Being a part of the band shortly led him into formal dancing.

At Southern he was able to meet individuals that allowed him to be creative and innovative. He picked up many skills by watching his peers attempting them. He soon realized by some of the SU Dancing Dolls of the time that dancing was a niche of his, “it is a God given talent,” says Jonas.

With the help of now dance masters, Kristi Vincent and Kiara Ely, Jonas was able to perfect his skills and grow. Kristi is a former LSU jazz instructor. Kiara is a former dancer for the dance company, BLOC and dances for many stars, “her skills are world renown,” says Jonas.

After a year or so Jonas began teaching dance and choreographing for the SU band and helping the Dancing Dolls. He worked with James Smith, the coach for the nationally ranked #1 SWAC Cheerleaders. Jonas also choreographed for many fashion shows and events, and taught at a studio.

He then moved on to formulating the Award winning Gold 'N’ Bluez Dance Team and worked for many upcoming artists in the area. Aside from directing the Gold 'N’ Bluez, his biggest accomplishments have been being accepted into the Alvin Ailey Intensive Program, choreographing for the AFL New Orleans Voodoo Dolls for a year, producing a various number of pro dancers in NBA and NFL, and recently choreographing a set for an artist at the Keisha Cole and Young Jeezy concert.

Jonas says that his life has been blessed because he has been able to learn and grow quickly. Things are only looking up for him. He has a loving family that always supports him.

He has many upcoming shows including one for Tre Vidure whose album sales are skyrocketing. Jonas is also participating in the 2006 State Farm Bayou Classic. “I really appreciate all the love SU, LSU, and B.R. have showed me and in the near future with prayer and ambition I will be able to recognize this as I work for the stars,” Jonas sincerely states.
